Building local expertise and industrial capabilities to advance energy development and long-term growth across Africa.
Nigeria’s energy ambitions extend far beyond increasing production. As the country works to strengthen supply, deepen its industrial base, and capture more value from its natural resources, companies with genuine in-country capability are becoming central to that transformation. “Africa has the resources,” says Paschal C. Anyanwu, Executive Chairman and Chief Vision Officer of Alphaden. “What it needs is the capacity to process them rather than export raw materials.” It is a conviction that has shaped the company from the outset. Alphaden Energy & Oilfield was founded as an indigenous oil and gas services company. Today it anchors Alphaden Holdings, an integrated African group operating across engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance (EPCM), gas infrastructure, LNG processing, exploration and production, renewable technologies, and manufacturing. That evolution reflects a long-term strategy built on developing the technical knowledge and infrastructure needed to create value at home rather than abroad.
The approach has carried Alphaden from specialized service delivery to broad industrial capability. Through its sub- portfolios, the group has built the depth required to take on increasingly complex projects and to expand the role indigenous firms play within Nigeria’s energy sector.Among its milestones is involvement in the Assa North gas development, one of Nigeria’s strategic projects aimed at expanding domestic supply. Alphaden’s participation reflects the growing ability of local companies to execute technically demanding, large-scale work to international standards.
“Africa has the resources; what it needs is the capacity to process them rather than export raw materials.”
The group has also strengthened its upstream position through the acquisition of five drilling rigs, including advanced hybrid models built for different terrains and operating environments. The investment lets Alphaden support projects across multiple stages of development, extending its role from service provider toward fully integrated energy solutions. “It is not just the rig,” says Anyanwu. “We can take a project all the way to first oil as an organization.”Securing financing from Afreximbank for its gas processing plant marked another step in that progression. Beyond the capital itself, the milestone reflected the governance and reporting standards Alphaden has put in place to engage with global financial institutions and support larger projects. With Nigeria holding some of Africa’s largest proven gas reserves, expanding processing infrastructure remains essential to raising domestic use and supplying the industries that depend on reliable energy. Alphaden sees gas as a key driver of industrial growth — a means of turning natural resources into broader economic value.
The company is also investing well beyond traditional oil and gas, developing solar panel manufacturing, battery storage systems and inverter production, alongside a 300-hectare fabrication facility incorporating additive manufacturing and 3D metal printing. These are long-horizon commitments to industrial capacity, built for future energy needs rather than current market conditions alone. For Alphaden, the next stage of growth is tied to a wider ambition: for African companies to take a leading role in developing the continent’s resources. By combining energy expertise, manufacturing and technology, the group aims to support a stronger domestic industry grounded in engineering capability, innovation and patient investment. Anyanwu sees rising demand and Africa’s deepening talent base as the defining opportunities ahead. “Nigeria has not even begun to scratch the surface of its energy needs,” he says. “Demand will keep growing, and that creates enormous opportunities for companies willing to invest. It’s Africa’s turn.”
