With four decades of expertise, Starzs Investments is strengthening maritime capacity, developing local talent, and expanding Nigerian expertise across Africa.
Starzs Investments Company Limited’s story began in 1986 with a vision to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime capabilities. Founded by Engineer Greg Ogbeifun,a maritime expert and chief engineer trained by Shell, the company started as a small barge operation before growing into one of Nigeria’s established maritime logistics providers. Nearly four decades later, Starzs continues to build on that legacy under the leadership of CEO and Managing Director Iroghama Ogbeifun, following a successful transition from one generation of leadership to the next. “Our company has seen a transgenerational transition in its time,” says Ogbeifun.
Over the years, Starzs has evolved alongside Nigeria’s energy sector, moving from barge operations into logistics-based management for Shell before expanding into deep offshore support services. Today, the company operates tugboats, security vessels, and supply boats for Nigerian and international oil companies, while maintaining long-standing partnerships with industry players including TotalEnergies. Beyond vessels and infrastructure, Starzs’ long-term contribution lies in developingthe people who will shape the future of African maritime.
Through its structured cadetship program, the company has trained more than 100 cadets over the past 16 years, strengthening expertise across the wider industry. “We recognize that the cadets are the future of the industry. They’re the ones to ensure the sustainability of our sector,” says Ogbeifun. The program has also expanded opportunities for women, producing the company’s first female chief engineer. Looking ahead, Starzs is exploring opportunities across Namibia, Liberia, Mozambique, and Angola as offshore energy projects, mining exports, and regional trade continue to grow. “We have the experience, expertise, professionalism, and structure,” says Ogbeifun. The company believes Nigerian operators can leverage decades of experience to support emerging maritime markets across Africa.
Starzs also sees Nigeria as ideally positioned to become a continental maritime hub, supported by its coastline, ports, offshore resources, and growing pool of professionals. “Nigeria has already built the capacity to become a maritime hub,” says Ogbeifun. “We just need to harness those capabilities and deploy them to service not just the region, but the rest of the continent as well.”
As Starzs approaches its 40-year milestone, the company remains rooted in its founder’s vision while expanding the talent and expertise needed to support Africa’s maritime future.
