Twiga Chemical Industries – Rooted in Kenya, Growing across Africa

Mr Sandeep Sharma - Managing Director of Twiga Chemical Industries Limited

In the heart of East Africa’s economic powerhouse, the future of global agriculture is taking root. In Kenya, where agriculture accounts for roughly 20% of a $135 billion gross domestic product and employs over 30% of the population, farming is far more than an enterprise, it is the lifeblood of a vibrant, youthful nation whose median age is just 21 years. Yet across smallholdings averaging just one to two acres, millions of farmers face a formidable array of modern pressures, from climate volatility, soaring input costs, shifting rainfall patterns, to post-harvest crop losses.

Against this backdrop, Twiga Chemical Industries Limited has spent nearly eight decades serving as the bedrock of East Africa’s agricultural ecosystem.

Founded on May 18, 1949, as a subsidiary of the United Kingdom’s Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), Twiga started life as an importer and distributor of crop protection products. Over the past 77 years the company has undergone a sweeping transformation, mirroring that of Kenya’s own industrial evolution. Today, the company is led by Managing Director Sandeep Sharma, and has become a multifaceted industrial leader encompassing crop protection, animal health, consumer goods, and high-yielding hybrid vegetable seeds.

At the heart of Twiga’s operations is its world-class, seven-acre manufacturing hub, the Toll Manufacturing Centre (TMC). This facility can produce 5,000 tonnes of specialized agricultural formulations annually. ISO 9001-certified and equipped with ISO 17025 – accredited research laboratory ,among  the first crop protection laboratory in East Africa to earn such distinction – Twiga formulates and repacks, and tests products locally. This local manufacturing engine allows the company to customize solutions to local microclimates while insulating African supply chains from global geopolitical shocks and transit delays.

Twiga’s value proposition lies in its deep integration with the African farmer. Recognizing that 40% of harvested yield is often lost to post-harvest pests, Twiga has engineered targeted field crop pests and crop disease solutions, grain storage solutions, bio stimulants and slow-release fertilizers designed specifically for smallholders. As Sharma frames the core imperative facing the sector, arable land is continuously decreasing. So within the same agricultural unit, productivity has to increase to feed the population.”

By repacking products into smaller, affordable package sizes and deploying a hyper efficient logistics framework capable of 24-hour last-mile delivery, Twiga ensures that cutting-edge science reaches the farm gate rapidly and affordably.

Beyond providing chemicals, Twiga operates as an educator to farmers. Through initiatives like the Twiga Farmer Outreach Program (TFOP) and model demonstration farms, the company employs university-trained agricultural graduates and PhD researchers who travel into the field to educate farmers on drip irrigation, pest management, crop nutrition and sustainable land stewardship. This commitment to quality, environmental responsibility, and operational excellence earned Twiga the prestigious Company of the Year Award (COYA) for Quality and Productivity.

As global markets turn their attention toward Africa’s massive untapped economic potential, Twiga represents a blueprint for sustainable growth on the continent. Driven by a strategic imperative to double its business volume and value every five years, Twiga is expanding beyond its traditional borders into Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia and further afield.

This continental trajectory aligns seamlessly with Kenya’s emerging role as the industrial and trade gateway to Africa. Backed by significant national infrastructure investments including expanding port capabilities at Mombasa and Lamu and supported by the regional integration frameworks of the East African Community (EAC) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Kenya offers an ideal springboard for multinational enterprise.

Yet fulfilling the potential of Africa’s agricultural revolution requires scale, capital, and global innovation. To achieve its vision of expanding across all 54 African nations, Twiga is calling for strategic partnerships. Opportunities abound for global players seeking to collaborate on green technologies, bio-based pest controls, AI-driven predictive supply chain logistics, cold-chain infrastructure, and expanded manufacturing franchises.

For investors navigating the African market, Twiga’s message is clear: success requires deep local roots, agile execution, and a commitment to shared value. While developed nations grapple with sluggish growth, Africa remains the planet’s most dynamic frontier. As Sharma emphasizes to prospective global partners: “Africa is enjoying steady growth at the moment. The return on investment in Africa is better than anywhere else”.

With Kenya serving as the stable centerpiece of East African commerce, Twiga Chemical Industries offers international partners a 77-year operational track record, a robust manufacturing footprint, and an attractive connection to the continent’s rising economic story.
