As the G20 convened on African soil for the first time in its history, TIME Africa hosted its inaugural G20 Impact Summit, bringing together leaders from government, industry, technology, culture, and multilateral institutions for a focused dialogue on Africa’s role in global decision-making. The Summit, held alongside the official G20 programme, was designed to provide a platform for African perspectives at a moment of heightened global attention on the continent.

A Summit Framed by History

South Africa’s presidency of the G20 marked a significant shift in the group’s trajectory: it was the first time the African Union participated as a permanent member, the first G20 hosted in Africa, and a rare moment where African priorities shaped the global agenda in real time.
Against this backdrop, TIME Africa’s convening emphasised practical pathways for collaboration across economics, climate, innovation, and governance.

Pan-African Participation

The Summit brought together a wide cross-section of African leaders and institutions, including:

  • HE Nardos Bekele-Thomas, CEO of AUDA-NEPAD
  • Honorable Ronald Lamola, Minister of International Relations & Cooperation
  • Honorable Sindisiwe Chikunga, Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities
  • Honorable Bogolo Kenewendo, Minister of Minerals and Energy, Botswana
  • Ambassador Emmanuel Hategeka, Rwanda’s High Commissioner to South Africa
  • Ambassador Nabhit Kapur, Permanent Observer to the United Nations (WSA)
  • Technology leaders from the private sector, including Nvidia and OpenAI representatives
  • Cultural figures and moderators such as Nandi Madida and Vusi Thembekwayo

Speakers addressed themes aligned with the broader G20 agenda, including sustainable growth, energy transition, innovation ecosystems, digital inclusion, intra-African trade, and the role of youth and women in driving economic transformation.

Key Themes

1. Africa’s Role in Global Governance

Several speakers noted that Africa’s increased visibility in global forums must translate into sustained influence. With the African Union now a permanent G20 member, the Summit underscored the need for coordinated continental positions on climate finance, debt reform, technology access, and capital mobilisation.

2. Investment, Infrastructure, and Industrial Policy

Leaders highlighted the need to accelerate African industrialisation through regional value chains, new financing instruments, and public-private partnerships. Conversations connected directly to themes at the G20 Leaders’ Summit, including infrastructure debt, energy systems, and climate resilience.

3. Digital Transformation and Innovation

Technology executives and policymakers examined the opportunities for AI, cloud infrastructure, and digital public goods to drive more inclusive growth. Multiple speakers noted that Africa’s youthful demographics position it uniquely to shape the global digital economy.

4. Cultural and Creative Influence

TIME Africa also emphasized the role of culture, storytelling, and media in shaping Africa’s global perception. This aligned with the Summit’s broader goal: ensuring Africa’s intellectual, creative, and policy contributions are visible on the world stage.

Context from the G20 Johannesburg Summit

The 2025 G20 Summit concluded with a leaders’ declaration reaffirming commitments to multilateral cooperation, sustainable development, and strengthening the role of the African Union within global governance structures.
The Johannesburg discussions focused heavily on energy transition, climate finance, debt vulnerabilities, and trade — issues directly relevant to many of the dialogues at the TIME Africa event.

The Summit also highlighted global divisions, but South Africa’s presidency emphasised maintaining continuity and ensuring the voices of the Global South remained central to the discussions.

A Platform for Continued Engagement

TIME Africa’s G20 Impact Summit demonstrated the need for a consistent, high-level platform for African policymaking, investment, and ideas. While the G20 rotates annually, the continent’s long-term development priorities require ongoing visibility.
The TIME Africa platform, supported by leaders across sectors, aims to contribute to that continuity.

As Africa emerges as a central actor in conversations around climate, technology, trade, and global governance, the 2025 G20 Summit and the TIME Africa Impact Summit reflect a broader reality: African leadership is not simply participating in global debates — it is shaping them.
