As the G20 convened on African soil for the first time in its history, TIME Africa hosted its inaugural G20 Impact Summit, bringing together leaders from government, industry, technology, culture, and multilateral institutions for a focused dialogue on Africa’s role in global decision-making. The Summit, held alongside the official G20 programme, was designed to provide a platform for African perspectives at a moment of heightened global attention on the continent.
A Summit Framed by History
South Africa’s presidency of the G20 marked a significant shift in the group’s trajectory: it was the first time the African Union participated as a permanent member, the first G20 hosted in Africa, and a rare moment where African priorities shaped the global agenda in real time.
Against this backdrop, TIME Africa’s convening emphasised practical pathways for collaboration across economics, climate, innovation, and governance.

Context from the G20 Johannesburg Summit
The 2025 G20 Summit concluded with a leaders’ declaration reaffirming commitments to multilateral cooperation, sustainable development, and strengthening the role of the African Union within global governance structures.
The Johannesburg discussions focused heavily on energy transition, climate finance, debt vulnerabilities, and trade — issues directly relevant to many of the dialogues at the TIME Africa event.
The Summit also highlighted global divisions, but South Africa’s presidency emphasised maintaining continuity and ensuring the voices of the Global South remained central to the discussions.
